Canadians were on a rotating hunger strike. This means that every single day for almost 4 months, numerous Canadians (sometimes hundreds a day) from coast to coast to coast were on a hunger strike calling for an arms embargo on Israel.
April 15 Hunger Strike Campaign Update:
It has been almost 4 months since we started a national rotating hunger strike calling for an arms embargo on Israel. Since then, nearly 1,400 people in Canada have been on a cumulative hunger strike of nearly 7,000 days.
We know that our collective actions are working, as we achieved a HUGE win when the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, confirmed that Canada will “cease the further authorisation and transfer of arms exports to Israel.” This signals a significant shift in policy. However, it is also a misleading statement. The Liberal government has said that this only applies to future arms, not the ones already approved to go to Israel. To add salt to the wound, our government also continues to buy weapons from Israel, which have been “tested” on Palestinians, exchanging our tax dollars for their crimes.
Now, we are more than 6 months into a genocide, and continue to bear witness to the most horrific and cruel atrocities that we have ever seen. Sadly, our government still isn’t listening to us in a meaningful way. The sense is that they really don’t care about starving Palestinians and hunger striking Canadians; they care about the economy.
We want to bring your attention to the global call to escalate actions starting April 15. The focus of this global initiative is to SHUT IT DOWN for Palestine by making it impossible for the economy to run as normal during a genocide. In Canada, numerous groups (including many of our endorsers) are mobilizing to ESCALATE. We will not stop until we win a true, full, two-way arms embargo.
In this next phase of organizing, the Gaza Starving Coordinating Committee is pivoting its efforts to echo the call by our endorsers and allies: “NO BUSINESS AS USUAL - while Canada Arms Genocide”.
Although we will no longer register individual hunger strikers on our website starting this week, we still believe in the powerful role of hunger strikes in making change. If you are considering an indefinite hunger strike, or are interested in organizing a large-scale group/sector hunger strike, contact us so we can see how we can support you.
